…Eressioni’s story: athempor’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil product range has been named after Eressioni (pronounced Eeressioni), an ancient Greek tradition that dates since 9 B.C. Eressioni originates from the word Eiros (pronounced Eeros) which means wool. Eressioni is symbolized with an olive tree branch (a.k.a. kotinos) decorated with twirls of white and red wool and autumn fruits such as walnuts, almonds, figs, chestnuts, cereals and other, except from pears and apples. Historically, Eressioni was a kind gesture of humans to goddess Athina, god Apollon and the Ores (Eunomia, Diki, Eirini) for expressing their many thanks for the land fertility of the leaving year and request, at the same time, for this fertility to continue in the year to come.
Eressioni is considered to be the ancestor of the modern Christmas tree. The Christmas tree tradition was brought over to the northern civilizations by Greek travellers in the form of Eressioni. In the absence of olive trees, these travelers continued the tradition of Eressioni by decorating branches from other trees.
Nevertheless, the tradition of Eressioni was always alive in the soul of Greek people and this was the reason why the modern Christmas tree came across such a great acceptance in Greece. Nowadays, the old Eressioni tradition starts to show up again between the Greek people, in the form of decorated olive tree branches.
